TwentyTwenty - Bright Futures for Young People

Started in 2007, TwentyTwenty helps hundreds of disengaged young people each year to develop self-belief and motivation, while achieving academic qualifications and learning work ready skills to help them find and keep good jobs.

TwentyTwenty
Our centre in Derby is run by a dedicated team of staff and volunteers who provide a welcoming and positive environment whilst offering vital care and support to young people who need it most.

We believe in the worth, talent and potential of all young people. No matter what challenges a young person has faced or is still facing, we know that with the right help, they can develop the confidence, personal resources and skills to move forward in their education and find sustainable employment.

Our Mentoring Scheme supports young people aged 10 - 24 years by providing one to one support over a 12 month period. Our volunteer Mentors provide vital role models with structure, fun activities and help to achieve life changing goals. Volunteer Mentors currently meet with their Mentees for at least one hour a week, supporting them to work towards achieving their set goals through a range of activities.

Would you like to help young people aged 10-24 to make more positive choices in life?

This scheme pairs young people with trained volunteer adult mentors from the local community in a year-long mentoring relationship. The mentor's role is to engage and encourage the young person to consider more positive decisions and actions. The aim is for the young person to develop essential social skills and for them to grow in confidence. Mentors meet their young person for a minimum of 1 hour per week for a year. The volunteers will first undergo some comprehensive training in order to help best prepare them for working with their mentee.

Each volunteer is matched with a mentee by the coordinator with the mentor completing a short online form (this is taught during training) after each session. The mentors will agree goals with their mentee and both will undertake activities that are of mutual interest or a developmental activity for the young person such as a new sport or a visit to a new place. A small bursary is available each week for the pair to spend or accrue. The mentoring pair will once a quarter capture the feelings and confidence of the young person using the SOUL Record system. This process is taught during training and is crucial to gauging the progress of each relationship. Mentors may also find themselves helping with CV writing or college applications and job searches. On other occasions they may engage in a voluntary activity together to help broaden the outlook of the young person. The volunteers will also benefit from monthly mentor socials paid for by TwentyTwenty.

TwentyTwenty aims to support disadvantaged 10-24 year olds in Derby to achieve positive learning and progression across various elements of their life. We specialise in working with young people who are at-risk of antisocial behaviour, school exclusion or becoming NEET (not in education, employment or training). We believe that given the right environments, support and challenge, these young people can achieve bright futures.

What are they looking for?

Life experience is the only essential requirement. Beyond this, a non-judgemental attitude (this does not mean having no standards for good behaviour), a sense of humour and people prepared to engage with a young person and take an interest in their lives, the challenges they face and their aspirations. We have found mentoring is enriched when a mentor has a skill they can share with a young person but this really isn't essential.
