The Chancellor announces the Job Support Scheme

Chancellor Rishi Sunak has revealed details of the new Job Support Scheme, that will replace furlough when it ends on the 31st of October. The scheme, which will begin in November and run for six months, is designed to help businesses that are facing lower demand due to Covid over the Winter months.

Under the scheme the employee must work at least one third of their normal hours, for which the business must pay the employee as usual. The government and the employer will then each pay a third of the remaining wages that the employee can't work for. This means that someone working a third of their hours would receive 77% of their pay.

All SMEs will be eligible for the scheme, larger businesses will be eligible if they can show that their turnover has fallen during the crisis. It will be open to employers across the UK even if they have not previously used the furlough scheme.
