Queen's Award for Abacus Lighting

Posted on April 21st, 2017

Chamber member Abacus Lighting has won a Queen’s Award for Enterprise: International Trade.

The Queen’s Awards are the highest official UK accolade that a British business can receive and recognises excellence.

Since 1950, Abacus, of Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, has been dedicated to British manufacturing and in 1965 it started exporting.

Half a century later, the company’s international presence has expanded with offices in Doha and Dubai and is supported by a growing export team and network of local distributors across Africa, the Americas and the Caribbean.

“We are proud to have been involved in many prestige projects around the world such as The Manuka Oval in Australia, Lusail City in Qatar and Callao Port in Peru,” said a statement on the company’s website.

“Whether it’s road lighting, airport aprons or iconic sports stadia, our customers continue to engage Abacus to light their projects worldwide. Our customers have helped us become this award winning company,” it added.

This award, conferred by Her Majesty The Queen on the recommendation of the Prime Minister, saw Abacus succeed following examination by an Advisory Committee composed of leading individuals from industry, commerce, trade unions and Government.

To qualify for this award, a company must demonstrate substantial and sustained increases in export earnings over three consecutive years, to a level which is outstanding for the products and services concerned, and for the size of the organisation.

“This is something Abacus is proud to have achieved and it pays testament to our employees’ hard work and effort in growing Abacus as a worldwide brand,” the statement said.

“Our business continues to excel in manufacturing and supplying British-made product, both internationally and domestically,” it added.

A winners’ reception held by Her Majesty The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh will take place later this year at Buckingham Palace and the company will be visited by The Queen’s representative for a presentation of a crystal chalice and scroll, symbolising the formal Grant of Appointment.
