There will be a strong international flavour to a regional roundtable group set up to discuss the Spring Statement as it happens this week.
Chancellor of the Exchequer Philip Hammond will present his statement to Parliament at lunchtime on Wednesday.
It is his final budget event before the 29 March deadline for the UK’s leaving the EU under Article 50.
It will come the day after MPs take part in a ‘meaningful vote’ on Prime Minister Theresa May’s withdrawal agreement and ahead of votes on leaving without a deal or asking for an extension to the Article 50 deadline.
“The Spring Statement should be just an update on where the economy is against Budget forecasts from October last year, but it is also an opportunity for the Chancellor to show the world that UK plc will remain open for business after Brexit,” said Chris Hobson, Director of Policy at East Midlands Chamber, which has organised the roundtable event.
He added: “We don’t have inside information but there could be all sorts of tantalising nuggets in what Mr Hammond delivers on Wednesday to help UK businesses through whatever lies ahead… or he might waste this golden opportunity and simply report on how the economy is coping amid all the doubt and uncertainty.
“Whichever, we have pulled together a panel to discuss the statement as it is delivered to the House of Commons. Sitting round the table will our own Head of International Trade, Laura Howard, businesses involved in exporting, accountants, legal experts and others.”
