Careful consideration needed over immigration plans

A leaked Government document has set out plans for controlling immigration from the EU post-Brexit.

Media reports this morning focused on the limitations to be imposed on unskilled migrant workers.

Chris Hobson, Director of Policy at East Midlands Chamber, said: “In this region, we have some of the lowest unemployment levels in the country which can make it difficult to recruit at all levels, skilled and unskilled.

“While we recognise that Government wants to focus on continuing to allow skilled labour to enter the UK from the EU, any measures that present barriers on top of the current state of play will need careful consideration.

“It is important that firms are able to retain their existing workforces from the EU to prevent any potential cliff edges when it comes to accessing labour.

“In the long term, as a country, we need an education system that produces the skills and attributes our businesses tell us they need from young people, but that is a longer-term project.”
