£40m access road plan reaches another milestone

Plans for a £40million access road – part-funded through the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership – moved a step closer today (March 16).

The Gedling Access Road (GAR) is a proposed 3.8 kilometre road to link the existing A612 Burton Road to the B684 Mapperley Plains road, with a view to reducing congestion in Gedling Village. The GAR is part of the Gedling Housing Zone and would see the redevelopment of the former Gedling Colliery site, creating job opportunities and the chance to create almost 1,000 new homes.

Nottinghamshire County Council, the Homes and Communities Agency, Gedling Borough Council and Keepmoat Housing Ltd are partners in and funders of the road project – which in July 2013 was also allocated £10.8million via the former D2N2 Local Transport Board (LTB).

D2N2 is the private sector-led Local Enterprise Partnership which promotes economic and jobs growth across Derby, Derbyshire, Nottingham and Nottinghamshire. Its Local Transport Board, which has since been replaced, was a partnership between local authorities in the area and the D2N2 LEP, which decided how Government funding for major local transport schemes in the D2N2 area should be spent.

Today’s (March 16) County Council Transport and Highways Committee gave the go ahead to start the legal process to acquire the land and rights required to construct the GAR, including making changes to side road and other access points affected by the new road.

The legal processes (known as Compulsory Purchase and Side Roads Orders) are due to be published and landowners formally notified, in May (2017). Any objections would be reviewed in June and – if the Department for Communities and Local Government felt one was necessary – any subsequent public inquiry would be held in autumn 2017.

Around 28 hectares of land will need to be acquired to construct the Gedling Access Road.

Nottinghamshire County Council has said that no existing residential properties will be affected, with the only buildings affected being outbuildings or derelict properties. The Council is working with private owners of the land plots required.

The route of the GAR takes it alongside Gedling Country Park. Discussions are underway with Gedling Borough Council to ensure work required won’t impact on the main Country Park and is in keeping with the area.

Councillor Alan Rhodes, Leader of Nottinghamshire County Council, said: “This is one of the biggest infrastructure projects our County Council is currently involved in. It’s one which will benefit residents, road users and businesses in the long-term. It will mean 1,000 new homes for the Gedling area and will contribute towards the creation of jobs, apprenticeships and training opportunities.”

Construction of the access road is due to begin in spring 2018, with an expected completion date of spring 2020.
