2020 Meets with MDC Directors to Find out Business Community Priorities!

Posted on September 5th, 2017

With councils across the UK facing significant reductions in funding over the next five years, local authorities are being pushed to be more dynamic, self-sufficient and targeted.

Under Mayor Kate Allsop’s leadership, Mnasfield District Council (MDC) is embarking on a journey of change and transformation, focusing on raising aspirations and the profile of the district.

Mansfield and Ashfield 2020 Board Director and Local business leader Kath Jephson met with current Interim Chief Executive of MDC Hayley Barsby to discuss priorities for the local economy and it was clear business is very much at the forefront of their priorities.

There is a continued drive to attract new businesses and support existing business. Crime partnerships were identified along with CCTV coverage to help boost security and business confidence.

Joint initiatives such as the upcoming procurement event with MDC, Ashfield District Council, Mansfield and Ashfield 2020 and East Midlands Chamber are in place to boost business growth and to encourage businesses to think and ‘buy local first!’

Transport issues are also high on MDC’s agenda, with junctions 27 and 29 on the M1 playing a key role in their priorities, not only for improvement but also for changes that are needed around the infrastructure in order to attract new businesses to the area.

MDC is putting measures in place to ensure efficient use of resources and ease of information-sharing is at the forefront to help businesses and residents.

Communication links are strong between MDC and new Mansfield MP Ben Bradley, which is a positive move forward and it is believed that together issues and priorities can be tackled for the benefit of the town.

A quality hotel is high on the agenda for the town as part of the Council’s regeneration plans and expressions of interest are being perused.

It is a case of ‘watch this space’.

2020 has been working with business leaders on initiatives to attract a hotel to the town and to continuously support and provide factual information to demonstrate the demand and profitability of a local hotel.

Other items on their priority agenda include key town centre regeneration sites as well as local graduate retention.
