On Thursday 19th October, Derby-based, inniAccounts, the online accountancy for self-employed professionals, won the title of Practice Excellence Pioneer at the Practice Excellence Awards in London. The awards are the most prestigious in the accounting industry calendar and the Practice Excellence Award is given to individuals who are changing the future direction of the sector.

In a break with tradition, this year the judging panel decided to recognise the entire team at inniAccounts for its innovative cloud-based accounting software, including artificial intelligence (AI), and its leadership in delivering exceptional customer service.

James Poyser, co-founder and CEO of inniAccounts, who collected the award from TV’s Rachel Riley, said: “Over the last ten years the way people work, especially attitudes to being self employed, and our appetite for online business services has changed significantly. The gig economy is really coming of age.

However the accounting industry has failed to keep up. We set out to address this gap and change the way accountants provide services to people who decide to become independent consultants or contractors. Our aim was to shake up the model for customer service by employing expert accountants and combine it with access to real-time online accounting.

“And that’s exactly what we’ve done. Every day the whole team at inniAccounts works hard to make managing and filing accounts easy and quick to do, so that our clients can spend more time on the most important task of all - growing their business. This award is a superb independent endorsement of our cloud-based strategy, and it’s gratifying to see that huge parts of the profession are now looking at how we work as a model for their future practices.”

James adds that the award also recognises the company’s new adventure into AI: “It’s very easy to think that artificial intelligence in something only the Google’s of this world can do, but we’re proving that you can be a fraction of the size and transform an industry. The AI we have already adopted is making waves - our customer retention and referrals are at an all time high. It’s an exciting time as we prove more and more concepts every week - we know that there is far more we can do to propel the industry into a new era and accelerate our own growth at the same time.”

This isn’t the first time inniAccounts has been recognised for its innovation and pioneering spirit. In April 2016 it was awarded the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Innovation for its real-time tax accounting service, and was voted the UK's best small/medium contractor accountant by Contractor UK.
