The Microsoft technical description of the malware used in the attack can be found at http://bit.ly/2qDg2Wx

To help reduce the risk of falling victim to a similar attack in future, members are urged to follow this guidance:

  • Understand the 'technical estate' that you are responsible for - not just computers but things like smartphones, printers, network switches as well

  • Install the latest updates on all software on all systems within your network (Microsoft has released a patch relevant to the recent malware for legacy Windows XP systems http://bit.ly/2raS5BZ)

  • Use Anti-Virus software at all times and ensure that it is also updated

  • Regularly backup your system or critical data to a storage device that is not within the same network. Consider cloud storage options where suitable.
  • If you believe you have been a victim of a ransomware attack, report it to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or online at www.actionfraud.police.uk
