The new home for local businesses, start-ups, students, graduates and local entrepreneurs. Nottingham Trent University are opening a dynamic and innovative centre for both entrepreneurs and growing enterprises that want to work and co-locate with them.

Food & Drink Manufacturing Sector Support

Nearly 17,000 people are employed in food and drink manufacturing in the D2N2 region, with particular concentrations in the Peak District, Newark & Sherwood, Bassetlaw and Amber Valley, and especially in rural areas because of links to D2N2’s important agricultural base, with the agri-food sector continuing to grow during the recession. D2N2 is home to many blue chip food manufacturers, including Thorntons, Warburtons, Nestle, Greencore, British Sugar and Pork Farms, in addition to a vibrant SME base across the urban and rural landscape, with high quality goods of world renowned provenance.

Support for Food and Drink Manufacturing Businesses

The Food & Drink Forum

The Food and Drink Forum works with micro to medium sized businesses, with 96% of the sector made up of these sized businesses. They are a trade association for the food and drink manufacturing sector, working predominantly across the East Midlands. They work with manufacturers on a day-to-day basis providing a range of business support services.

With the food and drink sector facing so many regulations, their team of experts work with businesses from as early as the start-up stage to ensure that they are compliant and running effectively.

Established in 1998, the Forum has a knowledgeable technical team who provide hands-on support for those businesses lacking technical resource, providing assistance with the following:

  • Product Development
  • Labelling (including compliance with new FIR regulations)
  • Shelf Life & Product Testing
  • Factory Set Up & Upscaling
  • Nutritional Analysis
  • HACCP Creation & Implementation
  • Training in; Food Safety, Health & Safety, HACCP, Internal Audit
  • Environmental Health Inspections & Queries
  • Accreditation Support including; SALSA, BRC, STS, Halal, Organic Certification

The Food & Drink Forum has secured funding to offer a range of services to food and drink manufacturers, including; grant funding, business mentoring, industry events, technical support, technical apprentices and industry-specific events throughout the course of the project. In order to be eligible to access services through specific projects, business must be a food and drink manufacturer and an SME.

The National Skills Academy for Food & Drinkexists to provide businesses across the UK’s food and drink manufacturing and processing industry with a single source of access to leading edge workforce training, vocational study and skill upgrades designed to boost productivity, innovation, profitability and growth.


The National Careers Service, Careers Inspiration can help to facilitate and support relationships between employers and schools to work closer together to raise the profile of the importance of preparing for the world of work and career choices. They are looking for employers who are willing to volunteer in a local school to help their students make better informed decisions about their futures. Employers can assist schools and their students improve their employability skills through a number of initiatives including:

  • attendance at careers fairs
  • inspirational careers talks
  • help with interviews skills and CV writing
  • visits to workplaces
  • high quality work experience
  • mentoring and coaching

STEMNET creates opportunities to inspire young people in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) subjects. It works with thousands of schools, colleges and STEM employers in the UK, to enable young people of all backgrounds and abilities to meet inspiring role models (STEM Ambassadors), understand real world applications of STEM subjects and experience hands-on STEM activities that motivate, inspire and bring learning and career opportunities to life. This delivery spans young people aged 5 to 19 and delivers throughout all state-funded primary and secondary schools.
