Nottingham Business School  is working with the Small Business Charter to deliver a specialised government funded programme for leaders of small businesses to survive and thrive in the coming months and post coronavirus. This new scheme comes as part of a £20million package the government are providing to help small businesses in the long term.

The Small Business Leadership Programme supports senior leaders to enhance their business’s resilience and recovery from the impact of COVID-19, and develop its potential for future growth and productivity. Participants will develop strategic leadership skills and the confidence to make informed decisions to boost business performance. The programme is delivered by a consortium of business schools accredited by the Small Business Charter (SBC), and supported by the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy.

The programme is free and fully funded by the Government to support the resilience, recovery and growth of SMEs during and after COVID-19 and designed to be manageable alongside full-time work. Participants will attend eight 90-minute webinars across ten weeks, and complete up to three hours of independent study and peer-supported learning per week.

Participants must be in senior management roles, with at least one direct report, in businesses which have been operating for at least one year and with 5-249 employees in England.

Programme

The Small Busines Leadership Programme is an intensive 8 week course.

Participants are required to attend all sessions. Each module has:

One 90-minute workshop

Approximately 2 hours of individual learning

One 1 hour weekly peer group review session

Curriculum

Module 1: Overview and Themes
In the first module we will be discussing what productivity, resilience and sustainability mean for small businesses, why they matter and what might make a difference in your business.

Module 2: Innovation and Markets
What is innovation for a small business and why do it?  We will look at the relationship between innovation, margins, and productivity, and how a small business can take a customer focussed approach using innovation to differentiate their products and services.

Module 3: Leadership & Employee Engagement
You will identify ways to develop your personal leadership capability and consider the role you need to undertake as your business needs change.  We will focus on how you lead others and look at the productivity benefits of creating a high performance workplace.

Module 4: Vision, Purpose and Brand
How clear are you about why you do what you do, and how well is that communicated both internally and externally?  We will give you tools to describe where you want your business to be in the future and how you will get there.

Module 5: Your Customers – Segmentation, Targeting and Positioning.
This module is about developing a strategic approach to marketing, understanding your customer groups and ensuring the way you communicate and manage relationships is tuned in to the needs and behaviour of your customers.

Module 6: Operational Efficiency
You will examine ways in which your productivity could improve through operational efficiency, look at the value chain for your business and the potential for using data analytics and digital tools, and consider the skills and training implications for your workforce over time.

Module 7: Finance and Financial Management
We will discuss how the right financial management and reporting systems can help enhance your business performance and give you important data to support decision-making.  You will learn how to put together a cash flow forecast, and where to seek the external finance you may need to support your future growth.

Module 8: Action Planning and Implementation
By the time you reach this module you may very well have already changed some of the things you do in the business.  This is an opportunity for you to draw together what you have learned on the programme and put it into a practical action plan giving you a clear direction for the next few weeks and beyond.

Eligibility

Businesses can be registered to and trading from any address in England.

Participants must be in senior management roles, with at least one direct report, in businesses which have been operating for at least one year and with a minimum of 5 employees up to a maximum of 249 employees.

State Aid

The Small Business Leadership Programme is a Government funded programme provided at no charge to you, however, the support does count as De Minimis State Aid as per EC Regulation 1407/2013 (De Minimis Aid Regulation) as published in the Official Journal of the European Union 24 December 2013 and is required under Art.6.1-2.


We estimate the total value of the aid that you will receive by taking part in the programme as £5280 (€5769.35).
