This course is for anyone in the construction sector interested in policies, regulations, and assessment strategies and the impact they are having on construction technology, the efficient use of resources, and the promotion of health and wellbeing.

This course is delivered by Yangang Xing. Yangang is a senior lecturer in construction technology and building engineering services within the School of Architecture, Design and the Built Environment (ADBE) at Nottingham Trent University. He gained his PhD from the University of Salford.

Course content and learning outcomes

The course addresses the following themes:

  • Gaining an overview of sustainable development.
  • Considering how climate change affects buildings and people.
  • Learning about the policies and assessment methods including the UK Climate Change Act and Net Zero.
  • Considering water, sewage management, and sustainable drainage.
  • Understanding what is meant by the 'circular economy'.
  • Finding out about managing energy demand, renewal energy, and energy storage.

You'll also learn about systemic strategies for reducing the environmental impacts of buildings by looking at:

  • Behaviour, performance gaps and sustainable consumption.
  • Procurement.
  • Green building inspections, commissioning, operations and retrofit.
  • Nature-Based Solutions for the built environment.

As a result of completing the course, delegates will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an awareness of the implications of a range of sustainability policies, assessment strategies and related technologies.
  2. Show an understanding of the mechanisms of building energy, water and materials consumption.
  3. Make logical recommendations based on the information available.
  4. Demonstrate a range of transferable skills that will be valuable in the workplace.
