Please note: This course is delivered through the Enterprising Ashfield project, which is funded by the Government's Towns Fund. Nottingham Trent University (NTU) is pleased to offer free (fully funded) places on this course to support individuals and employees of businesses that are based in the towns of Kirkby-in-Ashfield and Sutton-in-Ashfield.

The standard fee would normally be £595.

Public relations, or 'PR', is all about the way organisations communicate with the public, promote themselves, and build a positive reputation and public image.

On this course you'll consider and manage how you are represented in the media (both online and in printed material), and how you are perceived by your stakeholders and the wider public.

This course is ideal for business owners or managers and for anyone that needs to understand how you and your business are perceived.

It's also for anyone with an interest in marketing who is interested in developing the knowledge and skills which they can apply in any area of their life - whether marketing yourself or developing writing skills.

What you’ll study

On this course you'll understand the theory of PR and how it fits with your marketing plans.

You'll discover how to structure a basic PR campaign and identify PR tactics available for you to implement.

You'll also prepare for responding to unwanted stories, understand how to run a successful press conference and complete media training so that you can be an effective spokesperson for any organisation.

During this course you will:

  • understand how to create powerful copywriting
  • structure and write a story that is newsworthy
  • learn how to creatively sell your story to editors
  • determine what a PR campaign is and the importance of targeting and evaluation
  • structure your own PR campaign and look at what an effective campaign includes
  • look at the practical elements of how to contact a journalist and engage editors
  • consider how to develop your own crisis management plan for unwanted stories.

You'll be introduced to writing techniques and practice exercises to boost your confidence in PR, learning in a supportive and creative environment with classroom discussions and critiques.

What you'll gain

By the end of the course you will have structured and written a story for press, and you'll leave with an understanding of how to sell your story to editors.

You'll have the confidence to be a spokesperson for your organisation and know how to deal with unwanted stories.
