Unlocking the future: Inspiring Nottinghamshire's care leavers

Host: Nottinghamshire County Council
Venue: The Director's Suite, Notts County Football Club, Nottingham, NG2 3HJ
Date: Thursday 7th March, 2019
Time: 7.15am - 8.30am
Cost: Free

In early Spring 2019. Nottinghamshire’s Looked After Children and Care Leavers Strategic Partnership Board, led by Nottinghamshire County Council and Nottinghamshire’s seven district and borough councils, will publish its Local Offer for Care Leavers.

This Offer provides Nottinghamshire's care leavers (aged 18 to 25) with an overview of all the services and support they can expect from the councils and other public, voluntary and private sector organisations to help them make the transition to adulthood.

The care offer covers a number of different elements, one of which features the important task of preparing young people in care for the world of work and helping those leaving care to find work. With the right support, we find these young people to be hard working, extremely loyal and committed employees, achieving higher retention rates once given the training and employment opportunities to succeed.

As their “corporate parents”, councils have statutory responsibility for these young people as if they were their own children. Because of their childhood experiences, these young adult are some of the most vulnerable people in our community. As such, there’s a move to thinking that the wider community also has a responsibility for these young people.

This event will provide your business with

  • An overview of Nottinghamshire’s Local Offer for Care Leavers

  • An understanding of the experiences of being a care leaver

  • The challenges faced by care leavers when entering the world of work

  • The training and employment aspirations of care leavers

  • An opportunity to consider how your organisation can actively support care leavers to fulfil their potential through work

  • Information on the support available to your organisation when working with care leavers

A full agenda will be provided nearer the event. Hot breakfast rolls and hot drinks will be served from 7.15am. Please advise Joanne Mathieson if you have any special dietary requirements.
