Six leadership skills to help your business grow.

As your business starts to grow you may need to change your way of working. You need to lead the company rather than manage it. Strong leadership skills can help you to ensure that your whole team buys into your growth plan and move you towards achieving success.

So what is leadership? There are a lot of different definitions but the one we wanted to share today is:

Leaders help themselves and others to do the right things. They set direction, build an inspiring vision, and create something new. Leadership is about mapping out where you need to go to "win" as a team or an organisation; and it is dynamic, exciting, and inspiring.

Some people are born to be leaders and others learn the skills with experience. To be able to lead a business successfully you may need to acquire or enhance a number of skills. We wanted to share with you six skills that will help you to become a successful leader:

  • Vision - leaders need to be able to create a realistic, convincing and attractive depiction of where the business should be going. A clear vision provides direction, sets priorities, and provides a marker, so that your whole team knows what needs to be achieved and by when.
  • Communication - in every organisation communication is key. As a leader you need to be able to communicate internally within the organisation and also with your stakeholders. Communication is about listening, as well as talking to others. Many business owners that are moving from a management to leadership role often access support to hone their communication skills.
  • Motivation - leaders need to be able to motivate and inspire the whole organisation. Particularly as the business grows as you may need to implement some changes, which the team may struggle to embrace. If you keep them motivated and keep the vision alive for them you will find that you achieve success quicker. Where possible connect individual or team goals to the vision, this makes it real for them.
  • People Skills - the biggest challenge for business owners moving into a leadership role is often ‘letting go’. You may have started your business on your own and been responsible for delivering all the services. As your business grows you need to be able to step away and let your team take responsibility. As part of this process remember to always listen to your team, be flexible in your approach and offer support as needed.
  • Integrity – it’s important to be honest and have good integrity. You are leading the organisation and everyone will follow your lead. If you make honest and ethical behavior your key value then your team will follow suit.
  • Responsibility - As the leader you need to take responsibility for the business. If a problem arises your team will come to you, and you need to be able to problem solve and support them as required. This may also involve sometimes having to manage conflict. A successful leader always sets a good example and if you are fair and support others you will be able to develop a positive culture.
