Start up Support

Interested in starting your own business?  There are a number of organisations both locally and nationally that can help you, listed below by local council area.

There are a number of things to think about. These are listed in the section on business planning along with a checklist of what you need to do.

If you are unemployed and in receipt of Job Seekers Allowance or certain other benefits, ask your Job Centre about New Enterprise Allowance as this can offer both funding and advice to help you start a business.

Start Up Loan Funds can be accessed by pre-start businesses or companies that have recently started trading. The schemes may also provide access to expert personal support from business mentors.

Business is Great - Start outlines national Government’s support for start up businesses.
The Business Exchange provides a forum for big businesses to pledge an offer of support to small businesses and for small businesses to pick up on those offers.


The Gov.uk website provides comprehensive information on starting a business in the 'Setting up' section. A fact sheet guide to starting and growing a business from home is also available to download from the GOV.UK website.


HM Revenue and Customs have a general online learning package for people thinking of starting or developing a business. Use this for more information on keeping records, business expenses, growing your business, taking on staff, payroll issues, and VAT as well as HMRC webinars, email alerts and videos


The national Business Support Helpline tel: 0300 456 3565 provides advice and guidance to new and existing businesses covering both national and local schemes, grants and loans.


The Carbon Trust has launched a new energy efficiency programme called START2ACT, providing free-of-charge energy efficiency training, online energy saving advice and breakfast events to young SMEs and start-ups in the UK.


Cobra − business information factsheets cover all aspects of starting and running a business including employing staff, marketing your business as well as information on setting up specific types of business such as a gardening business or tattoo artist.
