Stress, anxiety and depression within the workplace are at the highest levels ever recorded. According to the Labour Force Survey (LFS), in 2016, 45% of all reported absenteeism was accounted to stress. This is now costing UK businesses, over £2.4 billion a year (UK Statistics Authority).

The 'Building Resilience and Wellbeing for Growth' conference will look at all aspects of wellbeing from HR support to enabling leaders to drive a ‘wellbeing culture’ for business growth and employee satisfaction and ultimately employee retention.

All of the guest speakers have a passion for organisation and personal wellbeing and bring along their wealth of knowledge and experience from the private and public sectors, the academic arena and the wellbeing industry.

Local business will have the opportunity to discuss with peers and wellbeing experts and practitioners practical ways to introduce or grow the wellbeing agenda within your business. There will also be a marketplace of exhibitors, plenty of networking opportunities and refreshments and lunch will be provided.

Join in this crucial discussion on how businesses and individuals can help drive a ‘Wellbeing culture’ in 2018 and beyond.

This event is taking place during Mental Health Awareness Week (14 - 20 May 2018).

9am: Registration and Networking

9.30am: Welcome and introduction to D2N2 Growth Hub (Chris Pook, D2N2 Growth Hub Manager)

9.45am: Wellbeing – The Rolls-Royce journey to date (David Roomes, Group Director - Health, Safety, Sustainability & Environment and Chief Medical Officer at Rolls-Royce)

Share the journey that Rolls-Royce has taken to drive a wellbeing agenda from Board level down. Sharing knowledge on how and why a business should look at wellbeing from 5 physical, mental, spiritual, social and intellectual points of view, and empowering employees to take the initiative in their health and wellbeing.

10.30am: ‘What do we mean by wellbeing?’ (Gareth Hughes - Lecturer, Psychotherapist and Research Lead – Student Wellbeing - University of Derby)

What do we actually mean by ‘wellbeing’ and how does it influence performance, resilience and the workplace? Drawing on research from psychology, biology and education, we will explore how emotional, physical and social wellbeing can improve or reduce the performance of individuals and teams. The session will also share practical skills and steps that can improve wellbeing for everyone.

11.15am: Tea & Coffee break and networking

11.30pm: A Public Health perspective of workplace wellbeing (Robyn Dewis, Consultant in Public Health Medicine)

Looking at government policy and how will this will be implemented at the local and regional level.

12 noon: Managing a change environment whilst looking after your employees' wellbeing (Paul Shepherd, owner Gritstone)

Exploring how managers and leaders in different businesses can implement change while minimising the impact this will have on the wellbeing of employees. Looking at leadership behaviours in the context of individual and organisational resilience and wellbeing or psychological responsibility.

12.30pm: Round-table discussion and questions for panel

12.45pm: Lunch Break & Marketplace to meet wellbeing experts to talk about tools and services that they provide.

1.30pm: Tools in mindfulness and yoga for Employee Engagement and Retention (Anna Kelynack-Boddy, Founder and Owner of Yogic Frog and Certified Yoga and Mindfulness Teacher)

Explore how managing your own energy, both physical and mental, drives how we work with our colleagues and employees. Using the ancient practices of Yoga and mindfulness we will share the tools of self-management.

2.00pm: Creating physical 'time-out' for employees (Athalie Redwood- Brown, Senior Lecturer – Nottingham Trent University, Founder and Owner – Crossfit Deviant)

The benefits of physical “time-out” on both the physical and mental health of employees within business as well as its impact on productivity and general workplace well-being.

2.30pm: Supporting business continuity through early intervention with those affected by posttraumatic stress (Sean McCallum, Managing Director, Social Support Systems CIC)

3pm: Closing Remarks and Finish

Speaker Profiles

David Roomes
Group Director – Health, Safety, Sustainability & Environment and Chief Medical Officer at Rolls-Royce

David is Group Director of HSSE and Chief Medical Officer for Rolls-Royce where he is responsible for leading the Global Health, Safety, Sustainability and Environment Function. David trained in medicine in Cape Town, South Africa and is board-certified in Occupational Medicine and General Practice. Previous roles in occupational medicine were with Rio Tinto (mining) and GlaxoSmithKline (pharmaceuticals). His current focus at Rolls-Royce is transformation and integration of the HS&E, Sustainability and Occupational Health functions as well as embedding workforce wellbeing as an enabler to enhance productivity, innovation and performance.

David is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, a Fellow of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine where he serves on the Board as Registrar and a Fellow of the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine. He also holds a law degree from Cardiff University. His special interests are workplace mental health and the relationship between wellbeing and employee performance and engagement.

Gareth Hughes
Lecturer, Psychotherapist & Research Lead – Student Wellbeing - University of Derby

Gareth Hughes is a psychotherapist and the Research Lead for Student Wellbeing at the University of Derby. Derby is a Gold rated university in the Teaching Excellence Framework (2017) and is in the Top 20 for teaching quality in the UK, according the Times Higher Education league tables. It is also recognised as a leading university in developing and providing support for student wellbeing. Gareth has a nationally recognised presence in the field of student wellbeing and has published and presented internationally on issues related to student wellbeing, academic anxiety, student transition, the role of student services and the links between wellbeing, learning and academic performance. He has been extensively quoted in national media. Gareth also teaches and lectures – delivering on Derby’s psycho-education programme and as a tutor at the Human Givens College and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Dr Robyn Caroline Dewis - Consultant in Public Health Medicine at Derby City Council

Robyn has been a Consultant in Public Health Medicine for Derby for the past 6 years, currently working at the City Council where she is responsible for leading the Public Health Consultancy function of the Public Health Department in Derby City. This role includes health protection, health improvement and supporting improvements in the delivery of local healthcare services. Robyn also leads on the training and supervision of Public Health Specialty Registrars and other junior Doctors on placement at Derby City Council. Robyn studied medicine at The University of Sheffield before training to become a General Practitioner in North Yorkshire. During this time she developed her passion for Public Health and Preventative Medicine.

Paul Shepherd
Owner of Gritstone

Paul has lived and worked in a number of countries for a wide, variety of organisations in the private and third sectors. He realised early in his career that for teams to be successful they had to have the right composition of knowledge, skills and behaviours. He uses several tools and techniques to help increase individual and organisational resilience, working with senior management teams to enable companies and their staff to achieve peak performance. His company, Gritstone, utilises Disc profiling and other behavioural models to reduce workplace conflict.

Anna Kelynack-Boddy
Founder and Owner of Yogic Frog and Certified Yoga and Mindfulness Teacher

Anna’s philosophy is that yoga and mindfulness is for everybody and Mind, because we all need tools and techniques to manage what life offers us. Anna worked as a Senior Manager within Rolls-Royce and Walgreens Boots Alliance over a 20-year period, across several different continents around the world. She has had direct experience of how the pressures, stress and physical affects from working within industry can affect how you perceive yourself and the world around you. After 12 years of practicing yoga, Anna trained as a Yoga Teacher seven years ago and started to integrate this into the management role, before launching her Yogic Frog business full-time in 2016.

Athalie Redwood-Brown
Senior Lecturer – Nottingham Trent University, Founder and Owner – Crossfit Deviant

Athalie has worked in the fitness industry for over 20 years, both as a practitioner and academic. She now co-owns her own functional strength and conditioning facility alongside her husband Rob whilst continuing to work as a Senior Lecturer at Nottingham Trent University. She has worked across a number of high profile organisations, including the Football Association, English Premier League and National Governing Bodies. Above all else, Athalie is a mum (of two small children) as well as an athlete and business woman, and as such is a huge advocate of creating physical “time out” for mental health and well-being.

Athalie has a passion for helping individuals no matter what their age, to feel empowered through health and exercise and optimise their human potential through physical activity.

Social Support Systems CIC
Psychological well-being consultancy

Social Support Systems specialism lies within the field of Critical Incident Stress Intervention and Support (CrISIS). They have supported a number of key infrastructure agencies and security services in the aftermath of a number of high-profile critical incidents including the Croydon Tram Derailment, The Westminster terror attack, the London Bridge/Borough Market attack, and the Grenfell Tower Fire.

As a community-based business, they assist third sector organisations whose clients are suffering distress or crisis due to poor mental health. Currently, they have work-streams focused on effective interventions with both victims and perpetrators of domestic violence, and those at risk of self-harm and suicide.

SSS is a progressive organisation and are all former or serving members of the armed forces and emergency services.

This workshop is part-funded via the European Regional Development Fund, therefore we are required to evidence that you are a small to medium enterprise.

There will be a couple of forms that will need to be completed either prior to the event or on the day and these will be sent to you once you have registered. One form is to ensure you are a small to medium enterprise, the second is to capture any business support you have received over the last 3 years to ensure you haven’t exceeded €200,000. If you have previously completed these forms at a Growth Hub event you will not have to complete another set.
